Sir Edwin Montague commented after General Dyer's clumsy orders - "a savage and inappropriate folly" -379 were killed and 1500 wounded when the British army opend fire on a peaceful demonstration of 20 thousand Indians in this park. this gave rise to Mahatma Ghandi's programme of civil disobediance.
